barbershop harmony
The barbershop music has its roots in North America, and it was developed during the beginning of the 20th century. It was exclusively a music for the white, male population. As the name indicates, the music was used as entertainment in the barbershop. Around 1950 even the women started to sing this kind of music, which later on has been spread all over the world.

The biggest organisation for women is 'Sweet Adelines', and the corresponding one for men is called S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.. It's very common with singing competitions between different groups, where not only the musicality is criticized, but also how the music is performed, even how the group is costumed. The texts in barbershop music are about love, or like in some older songs, nostalgic dreams about previous homecountries and old friends.

Here is the man who is full of enthusiasm for the barbershop music, Bosse Carlgren. In late summer of 2002, he and Arne Silfvergren started to organize a barbershopgroup in Visby. Later on that autumn Ulf Larsson and Göran Andersson joined the group.
These four men i WIBS have started the Wisby Barbershop Society to develop the barbershop style on the island of Gotland - Sweden, and for the spreading of this music. We are a member of the Barbershop Harmony WebRing.
Other groups are welcome to contact WIBS. We have a lot to learn. You will find contact information on our InterNet pages.
